Raising an assistance puppy is a wonderful, rewarding, and long-term commitment. To be a puppy raiser, you must raise the future service dog in your home for a minimum of 12 months. This is completely voluntary, so you provide food, veterinary care, training, socialization, and supplies for the puppy. Keep track of what you spend, though! Silver State Service dogs will give a tax write-off for expenses.
Volunteer Puppy Raisers are required to attend weekly established training classes for the duration when the puppy is in their care. Training is an on-going, daily event in the lives of the puppy and the family. Volunteer Puppy raisers are a crucial part of the process and many families find it very rewarding.
